Remember what momma says: 'If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is!'

There's a bunch of ads out there claiming the best rates around. I've seen "$15 Locksmith," "$19 Locksmith," "We'll beat any price," and so on. Put these claims to the test by doing these three important things:

  1. The MOST IMPORTANT thing to ask a locksmith is if they are local. Save yourself the frustration of waiting hours for a locksmith to show up. Even ask if they can show up in less than 20 minutes.

  2. Be ready to give the locksmith a few important details like how many cylinders (keyholes) need to be rekeyed, or if you are residential or commercial. If you ar...

The two major door hardware brands, whether you go to Home Depot, Lowes, or even Ace Hardware, are Schlage and Kwikset. Each brand has its own line of expensive and nicer styles or the alternative cheap and basic product lines. While you have several tiers of quality and price, choices of color, and even discounted sets, the key difference (pun intended) between Schlage and Kwikset is in one small detail: the keyway.

The keyway is the profile shape of the key and, to match, the shape of the key hole. A Kwikset lock’s key hole is a series of right angles that form its unique keyway. A Schlage lock’s key hole has a diagonal angle that makes its...

I was at a job yesterday where my new client talked about how much they liked their previous locksmith. They said that their locksmith was really fast and had good pricing. As I was taking apart the locks in preparation to rekey, I realized why this locksmith was so fast; he was only doing half the job! This locksmith was taking shortcuts at the risk of his client’s security. I made sure my client was aware and then I took an extra half-hour adding back pieces that were missing from the locks and making sure that they functioned how they were manufactured to function with their intended level of security.

Some locksmiths are willing to take shortcu...

You just walked out of your house and as you approached your car and reached into your pocket, you realized; “I forgot my keys!” You locked the door behind you and your windows are securely fastened shut because of the weather. If you live in, or near, Huntington Beach, NuKey Residential Locksmith is your neighbor. As your neighbor, we want to offer you the best and most honest locksmith services available in town.

Why is it important to call a local locksmith? Have you seen the ads for locksmith services that seem too good to be true? My parents always taught me that if it seems too good to be true, then it most likely is! $19, $25, or even $30 locksmith ads are designed to get you to make the call to inquire about further details. See my post, $19 locksmith scams, for more details on that subject. These locksmith directory-type services charge fees that will i...
